St Louis MO Information

St. Louis is the largest urban area in Missouri and one of the top twenty largest in the United States. Founded by colonial French traders Pierre Laclède and René Auguste Chouteau the city was named for King Louis IX of France. Originally part of the Spanish Empire, Napoleon Bonaparte acquired the land and promptly sold it to the United States in 1803.

Known and the "Gateway to the West" because of the important role St. Louis played in the westward expansion of the United States, the Gateway Arch was constructed as part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial and remains an iconic image of St. Louis. The city is also well known for its contribution to Blues, Ragtime, and Jazz, and was home to Scott Joplin the early 1900’s.

The city has many professional sports teams and over 40 Fortune 1000 companies are based there, making it diverse in opportunity and successful as an economic base. One of the largest employers is Belgian based Anheuser-Busch, and the city is home to other large corporations such as Scottrade, Energizer, Playtex, and Schick. Outlying suburbs support Monsanto, Express Scripts, Daimler-Chrysler and Hardee’s.
